Ryuichi Sakamoto is a Japanese musician, composer, record producer, and actor. He is known for his work in the famous Japanese electronic pop group, Yellow Magic Orchestra. Sakamoto began his musical journey at a young age and knew early on that he wanted to pursue a career in music. He studied music at the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music, where he obtained a bachelor's degree in composition and later a master's degree, specializing in electronic and ethnic music.

After working as a session musician, Sakamoto formed his own group, Yellow Magic Orchestra, with Haruomi Hosono and Yukihiro Takahashi. In 1978, he released his first solo album, "The Thousand Knives of Ryuichi Sakamoto." Following the breakup of Yellow Magic Orchestra, Sakamoto focused on his solo career and collaborated with renowned musicians such as David Sylvian, David Byrne, Thomas Dolby, Nam June Paik, and Iggy Pop.

Sakamoto explored various styles and genres throughout his career. He gained significant attention in 1983 with his album "Illustrated Musical Encyclopedia." In the late 80s, his albums "Beauty," composed of traditional Japanese and Okinawan chants, and "Heartbeat" and "Sweet Revenge," captured the hearts of listeners worldwide. In 1996, Sakamoto's album "Smoochy" seamlessly blended his signature pop and electronic sound with South American styles like bossa nova.

Sakamoto continued to experiment with new genres but always returned to his roots, showcasing his mastery of complex keyboard compositions. His last album, "Out of Noise," was released in Japan on March 4, 2009.

In addition to his music career, Sakamoto gained recognition in the film industry. He composed the soundtracks for Nagisa Oshima's "Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence" and Bernardo Bertolucci's "The Last Emperor," which earned him an Academy Award. His collaboration with David Sylvian on the song "Forbidden Colours" from "Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence" became particularly notable. Sakamoto also worked on the soundtrack for the cult anime film "Royal Space Force: The Wings of Honnêamise."

Sakamoto's involvement in the film industry extended beyond composing music. He occasionally took on supporting roles, such as Captain Yonoi in "Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence."
