Biography of Said Hanai
The Serial Killer from Iran
Said Hanai, a notorious Iranian serial killer, gained the nickname "Spider Killer" due to his preferred method of luring women to his home, engaging in sexual acts with them, and then strangling them to death. He targeted the residents of Mashhad, an eastern city in Iran, primarily focusing on prostitutes and drug addicts. Hanai believed that by eliminating these individuals, he was helping the city rid itself of moral corruption.
A Reign of Terror
In total, Hanai took the lives of 16 women before he was finally apprehended by authorities. Although religious motives potentially played a role in his actions, there were various rumors surrounding Hanai's motivations. According to one popular theory, his hatred of prostitutes stemmed from his impotence. Others claimed that his actions were in response to an incident where a driver mistook his wife for a prostitute. Hanai, however, insisted that he acted solely for the betterment of society.
The Hunt for Justice
After the discovery of the 16th victim, authorities launched a serious investigation into the killings. Temporary measures were implemented to remove prostitutes from the streets in order to prevent further deaths. The investigation eventually led to Hanai's arrest, followed by a highly publicized trial. Some religious citizens showed solidarity with the killer, praising his actions. From a fundamentalist Islamic perspective, there was a certain logic behind his deeds. Nonetheless, Hanai was ultimately found guilty and executed by hanging on April 8, 2002, at Mashhad Prison.
Media and Cultural Impact
The story of Said Hanai served as the inspiration for the 2002 documentary film "And Along Came a Spider." Additionally, in 2008, Alice Cooper released the album "Along Came A Spider," which also drew some references from Hanai's case.
