Political Empowerment and Electoral Victories
Before 2005, Kuwaiti women were prohibited from voting or holding elected office. However, in 2005, the National Assembly granted women the right to participate in the electoral process. Safa Al Hashem emerged as a formidable candidate in the 2009 general elections, but her bid was unsuccessful.
In the 2012 snap elections, Al Hashem again faced disappointment when her initial victory was invalidated by the Constitutional Court.
