Sahiba Gafarova: Politician, Professor, and Speaker of the Parliament

Early Life and Education

Sahiba Gafarova was born in the city of Shaмкиhor, Azerbaijan. She excelled in her studies, graduating with honors from Azerbaijan Pedagogical Institute of Russian Language and Literature named after M.F. Aghundov (Baku Slavic University) and Azerbaijan Pedagogical Institute of Languages. She is fluent in Russian and English.

Academic Career

After graduating, Gafarova pursued a successful academic career. She worked as a teacher, lecturer, and professor at Azerbaijan Pedagogical Institute of Russian Language and Literature, Western University, and Baku Slavic University. She also served as Dean of the Faculty of Western Languages and Head of the Department of European Languages.

Political Journey

Gafarova's political journey began in 2010 when she was elected to the fourth convocation of Milli Majlis (Parliament of Azerbaijan). She served in this role until 2020. During her tenure, she held the position of Deputy Chairperson of the Committee on Family, Women and Children for five years.

International Experience

In addition to her parliamentary work, Gafarova has played an active role in international organizations. From 2006 to 2007, she worked at the Institute for Women's and Gender Studies at the University of Michigan as a Fulbright Scholar. She also held leadership positions in the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), including Political Coordinator for the "Women Free from Violence" parliamentary network and Chairperson of the PACE Committee on Migration, Refugees and Displaced Persons.

Speaker of Milli Majlis

On March 10, 2020, Gafarova was elected Speaker of Milli Majlis. In this role, she leads the Parliament of Azerbaijan and represents the country in international forums. She is also the head of the delegations to the Interparliamentary Assembly of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS-IPA) and the Parliamentary Assembly of Turkic-Speaking Countries (TURKPA).

Recognition and Achievements

Gafarova's contributions to education and politics have been widely recognized. In 2016, she was awarded the honorary title "Honored Teacher of Azerbaijan" by the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan. She is the author of numerous textbooks, monographs, and scientific articles.
