Saida Imazzade: A Pioneer in Education and Women's Empowerment
Early Life and ActivismSaida Imazzade was born on December 29, 1910, in Sheki, Azerbaijan. In 1924, her family moved to Baku. Amidst the nascent social transformation of the time, Imazzade became actively involved in the "Gathering of Women's Representatives" organization in the Amirdjan district. Through this platform, she tirelessly advocated for women's rights and opportunities, shedding light on the challenges they faced.
Educational and Professional Journey
Despite societal pressures, Imazzade pursued her education. In 1926, she enrolled in the "Turkic Industrial School" in Baku. Her affiliation with the Ali Bayramov Women's Club in 1928 marked a significant turning point in her activism. As a dedicated member, she spearheaded efforts to empower Azerbaijani women.
Concurrently, Imazzade's passion for teaching led her to complete her graduation from the Azerbaijan Pedagogical Institute's History and Social Sciences Faculty in 1934. She initially taught at Baku's Secondary School No. 98 and later at School No. 21, swiftly rising through the ranks to become a school principal.
Contributions During World War II
With the outbreak of World War II in 1941, Imazzade's unwavering commitment to society expanded. She played a vital role in supporting war efforts by visiting military hospitals and providing moral support to women who had taken on roles in factories. In 1942, she participated in an anti-fascist rally of intellectuals in Tbilisi, Georgia, delivering a powerful speech.
During the war, Imazzade served as director of a boarding school for girls in Baku. Her dedication to the education of orphans and children whose fathers had been killed in action earned her widespread respect.
Post-War Achievements
In 1943, Imazzade was bestowed the esteemed title of "Honored Teacher" of the Republic. She was also awarded the "For the Defense of the Caucasus" and "For Selfless Labor in the Rear during the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945" medals. Her unwavering service culminated in the award of the prestigious Order of Lenin in 1946.
Literary and Scholarly Work
Throughout her life, Imazzade remained deeply committed to the women's liberation movement. Her research and writings, published in over 75 booklets and articles, provided a comprehensive analysis of women's struggles and achievements during a complex and often challenging period in history. Her works, which included "Women in Society and Family" (1963) and "Azerbaijani Women in the Great Patriotic War" (1969), have been archived in prestigious libraries in Paris and San Francisco.
Academic and Public Service
Imazzade served as the Dean of the History Faculty at Baku State University (BSU). She lectured on the history of the former USSR and specialized in teaching courses. She also played a significant role in Azerbaijan's public and political life. As the Chair of the Baku Women's Council and Deputy Chair of the Azerbaijan Women's Council, she continued to advocate for women's rights.
Family and Legacy
In 1924, Imazzade married Shakir Abdullah Efendi oglu Imazzade, a distinguished scholar who had received his education in Sheki. Their daughter, Taleya, went on to become a philologist, while their son, Mubariz, pursued a career in diplomacy, serving in multiple countries as a senior translator.
Death and Honor
Saida Imazzade passed away on May 1, 1992, at the age of 82. Her legacy as an educator, activist, and advocate for women's empowerment continues to inspire generations. In her honor, a scholarship was established at Baku State University, and a book titled "Nura boyanmış ömür" was published to commemorate her life and contributions.
