Saimir Pirgu is an Albanian opera tenor, considered one of the most promising artists in the opera and concert scene. Despite his youth, his career has been ongoing for almost ten years. Pirgu possesses a voice of rare beauty and outstanding dramatic abilities, allowing him to successfully perform the most popular roles in the lyrical repertoire, gaining approval from critics and recognition from audiences.

Early Life and Education

Saimir Pirgu was born on September 23, 1981, in Elbasan, a major city in the heart of Albania, near the capital. He studied violin in Tirana until he was 19 years old when he found himself in Bolzano, Italy, where the renowned vocal coach Vito Brunetti discovered his exceptional voice.

Early Career

In 2001, Pirgu won the Umberto Sacchetti Competition in Bologna and received first place in both the Caruso Competition in Milan and the Tito Schipa Competition in Lecce in 2002. In 2009, he was awarded the Franco Corelli Prize in Ancona. His first professional engagement came from the Rossini Festival in Bad Wildbad, Germany, under the direction of Alberto Zedda. He then performed at the Rossini Opera Festival in Pesaro, Italy, singing in "Il viaggio a Reims" and "Adina," and appeared in "Lucia di Lammermoor" at the Rome Opera.

International Success

At the age of 22, conductor Claudio Abbado selected Pirgu for the role of Ferrando in "Così fan tutte." Since then, Pirgu has worked with prestigious opera houses worldwide, including La Scala, Opéra National de Paris, Royal Opera House Covent Garden, Metropolitan Opera, and Vienna State Opera. He regularly performs with internationally renowned conductors such as Riccardo Muti, Lorin Maazel, Daniele Gatti, Seiji Ozawa, James Conlon, and Antonio Pappano.

Repertoire and Notable Roles

Pirgu's repertoire is vast and diverse, but critics and enthusiasts particularly highlight his performances as Ottavio in "Don Giovanni" and Nemorino in "L'elisir d'amore." His other notable roles include Edmondo in "Manon Lescaut," Alfredo in "La traviata," Tebaldo in "I Capuleti e i Montecchi," Duke of Mantua in "Rigoletto," and Rinuccio in "Gianni Schicchi" in productions at the Metropolitan Opera and Los Angeles Opera directed by Woody Allen. He debuted as Idomeneo at the Styriarte Festival in Graz under the direction of Nikolaus Harnoncourt and was chosen by Riccardo Muti to perform in Verdi's "Requiem" at the Salzburg Festival.

Recent and Upcoming Performances

In March 2012, Pirgu made his debut at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona, singing Rodolfo in "La bohème" alongside Romanian soprano Angela Gheorghiu as Mimi. In late August, he debuted in Buenos Aires at the renowned Teatro Colón in the rarely performed opera "I due Figaro" by Michele Carafa, portraying Count d'Almaviva. In September 2012, he made his first appearance at the San Francisco Opera as Tebaldo. In the current and upcoming seasons, Pirgu is expected to return to Vienna as Nemorino, perform in a concert at Théâtre du Capitole in Toulouse, open the season at Teatro di San Carlo in Naples as Alfredo in "La traviata," and sing Schubert's "Mass No. 5 in A-flat Major" in Munich with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra conducted by Maestro Muti. In 2013, to commemorate Giuseppe Verdi's 200th birthday, Pirgu is set to perform in a new production of "Rigoletto" at Opernhaus Zürich and sing Alfredo at the Metropolitan Opera.
