Nurlаn Ormanbetov: A Distinguished Military Leader

Born in Kazakhstan, Nurlаn Ormanbetov embarked on his military career after completing military training. Upon graduation, he was appointed commander of a reconnaissance platoon and subsequently became chief of intelligence and deputy chief of staff of a unit.

Service in Afghanistan

From 1981 to 1983, Ormanbetov served in Afghanistan as the intelligence chief of the 177th detachment, a specialized unit formed from the 22nd Spetsnaz Brigade of the Central Asian Military District.

Advancement through Command Ranks

Following his service in Afghanistan, Ormanbetov rose through the ranks, holding various command positions. He served as commander of a reconnaissance company, chief of staff of a separate reconnaissance battalion in the Baltic Military District, and commander of a separate reconnaissance battalion in the Group of Soviet Forces in Mongolia.

Staff Positions

After completing his studies at the military academy, Ormanbetov was appointed chief of staff and deputy chief of the Civil Defense of the Alatau and Soviet districts in Almaty.

Appointment to Senior Leadership

On April 1, 2009, Ormanbetov was appointed Commander-in-Chief of the Ground Forces of the Armed Forces of Kazakhstan. In 2010, he became the first deputy minister of defense and chairman of the Committee of Chiefs of Staff.

Promotion to General-Colonel

Ormanbetov was promoted to the rank of General-Lieutenant in 2009 and to General-Colonel in 2010. He has been serving as Minister of Defense of the Republic of Kazakhstan since September 13, 2016.
