Salaтын Asgarova: A Courageous Azerbaijani Journalist

Early Life and Education

Salaтын Asgarova was born on December 16, 1961, in Baku, Azerbaijan. She completed her high school education at School No. 18 named after Mikail Mushvig in 1979. Later, she enrolled at the Azerbaijan Institute of Oil and Chemistry.

Journalism Career

After graduating, Asgarova pursued journalism. From 1988, she worked as a reporter for the newspaper "Molodezh Azerbaydzhana" (Youth of Azerbaijan).

Conflict Coverage and Heroic Death

From 1990 to 1991, Asgarova covered the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, often traveling to the combat zone. On January 9, 1991, her car was ambushed by Armenian militants while traveling from Lachin to Shusha. Along with Asgarova, three military personnel were also killed: Lieutenant Colonel O. Larionov, Major I. Ivanov, and Sergeant I. Goyek.

National Hero of Azerbaijan

In recognition of her heroism, President of Azerbaijan Heydar Aliyev posthumously awarded Asgarova with the title of National Hero of Azerbaijan by Decree No. 294 on November 6, 1992.

Legacy

Asgarova's memory is honored in several ways:
A street in Baku is named after her.
A boat in Baku Bay bears her name.

A memorial plaque has been placed on the wall of the building where she lived.

The village near which she was killed has been renamed "Salatynkend" in her honor.
