Salih Berishawas born on August 1, 1944, in a farming family in Tropoja, Albania. He graduated from the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Tirana in 1967, embarking on a career as a cardiologist in Tirana's cardiology clinic.
Political Activism
In 1990, Berisha joined a group of intellectuals criticizing the Communist regime and its ruling party, of which he was a member. He became a prominent figure in the popular protest movement that eventually led to the downfall of Ramiz Alia's regime.
President of Albania
In April 1992, Berisha was elected as Albania's first non-Communist president. He led the country through the early years of post-Communism, but his presidency was marked by political instability and widespread corruption. In 1997, he was re-elected as president, but resigned just 3.5 months later amid a financial pyramid scheme scandal that left depositors with losses of around a billion dollars.
Return to Medicine
Out of office, Berisha returned to his medical profession. He is the author of several publications on the treatment of myocardial infarction and other heart conditions.
