Early Life and Education
Sally Claire Kellerman was born on June 2, 1937, in Long Beach, California. She is the daughter of Edith Bain and John Helm Kellerman. She attended Hollywood High School, where she developed a passion for acting, and later enrolled at Los Angeles City College. She further honed her acting skills at the acting studio in New York City, studying under Jeff Corey alongside notable individuals such as Shirley Knight, Jack Nicholson, Dean Stockwell, and Robert Blake.
Acting Career
Kellerman made her film debut in the crime drama "Reform School Girl" in 1957. In 1965, she portrayed the memorable role of Dr. Elizabeth Dehner in the television series "Star Trek" alongside Gary Lockwood and William Shatner. She reunited with Lockwood on the set of the series "The Bold Ones: The Protectors," also known as "The Crisis." Kellerman also appeared in the sci-fi series "The Invaders" and played Kate Mason in an episode of the Western series "The Legend of Jesse James" with Christopher Jones.
Kellerman gained widespread recognition for her role as Margaret "Hot Lips" Houlihan in the film "MASH." However, she declined to continue playing the character in the subsequent television series, and the role was taken over by actress Loretta Swit. In 1986, Kellerman portrayed Rodney Dangerfield's love interest in the comedy film "Back to School" and starred alongside Robert Altman in the drama "The Player" in 1992. She continued her career in 1994 with a role in the comedy film "Prêt-à-Porter" alongside Marcello Mastroianni, Sophia Loren, Cher, and Julia Roberts.
Throughout her career, Kellerman also worked behind the scenes, lending her voice to numerous television commercials. As a singer, she signed a record deal with "Verve Records" at the age of 17. She showcased her vocal abilities in Charles Jarrott's musical "Lost Horizon," collaborating with Liv Ullmann and Olivia Hussey. The soundtrack was released under the label "Razor & Tie." Kellerman also sang in the independent film "Open House" in 2004 and recorded the song "I Thought About You" with Ray Brown Jr., the son of Ella Fitzgerald and Ray Brown, in September 2008. In 2009, she released her jazz/blues album titled "Sally."
Personal Life
Kellerman was previously married to director Rick Edelstein from 1970 to 1971. Since 1980, she has been married to producer Jonathan D. Krane. In 1976, Kellerman adopted Claire, her sister's daughter, who had moved to France. Sadly, Claire's father passed away just two days after the adoption was granted. Jonathan and Sally also adopted twins, Jack and Hannah.
