Early Life and Education
Dame Sally Coates was born in the United Kingdom and attended the University of Durham, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in Geography in 1980. She subsequently completed a Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) at King's College London in 1981.
Teaching and Political Involvement
After obtaining her teaching qualification, Coates worked as a geography teacher from 1981 to 1985. She later pursued a Master's degree in Education at the University of London, Institute of Education. During the early 1980s, she was active in the student movement and served as a member of the National Organisation of Labour Students.
Political Career
Coates's political career began in 1986, when she became a councilor for the London Borough of Wandsworth. In 1995, she became a close political advisor to Tony Blair. Following the 1997 election, she worked in Blair's political office at 10 Downing Street.
In 2000, Coates served as a Minister of State for five months. She then returned to 10 Downing Street as Head of the Prime Minister's Delivery Unit. The press office described her as "hugely talented, exceptionally astute, and well-known as a trusted confidante of the Prime Minister" when she took up this post.
Coates retired from politics after the 2005 elections. It has been alleged that she was part of the close-knit group that influenced the decision to join the Iraq War.
Post-Political Career
Since March 1, 2011, Coates has served as the Chief Executive of Ofsted, the Office for Standards in Education, Children's Services, and Skills. She is also a member of the Advisory Board of the Institute of Education, University of London.
