Salvador Reyes Monteón, born on September 20, 1936, in Guadalajara, Mexico, was a prominent Mexican football player. He was primarily a striker and represented the national team in multiple international tournaments, including the FIFA World Cups in 1958, 1962, and 1966.

Early Life and Club Career

Reyes Monteón was the son of Luis Reyes, a former player of "Guadalajara." He started playing football at a young age and joined the official team of his hometown club when he was just seven years old. He began his professional career with the amateur team SUTAJ but made a significant move to "Guadalajara" at the age of 16. His debut match was against "Leon" from Campo-Oro. Reyes Monteón played for the club for 15 years and won seven Mexican championships, including the first professional one. His goal against "Irapuato" secured victory for Guadalajara in both the match and the championship. He formed an excellent partnership with Hector Fernandez, winning four consecutive championships, a record that remains unbroken to this day.

International Career

Reyes Monteón made his debut for the Mexican national team on March 4, 1956, in a match against Peru, which Mexico lost 0-2. He scored his first international goal on April 7, 1956, in a match against the United States, which ended in a 6-0 victory for Mexico. He played a total of 48 matches for the national team, starting in 44 of them and scoring 14 goals. He also represented Mexico in three FIFA World Cups. Following the 1966 World Cup, Reyes Monteón decided to retire from international football.

Later Life and Legacy

After retiring from professional football, Reyes Monteón worked for the club "Chivas USA" as a consultant and scout. His son, Luis Reyes, also became a professional footballer, continuing the family's legacy at "Guadalajara." Thus, Luis became the representative of the third generation of the Reyes family to play for the club. Salvador Reyes Monteón passed away on December 29, 2012, after battling cancer.

Accomplishments

Throughout his career, Reyes Monteón achieved numerous accolades. He was a part of the Mexican team that won the CONCACAF Champions' Cup in 1962. He also won the Mexican championship six times in 1957, 1959, 1960, 1961, 1962, and 1964. Additionally, he was the winner of the Mexican Cup in 1963 and the Mexican Super Cup in 1957, 1959, 1960, 1961, 1964, and 1965. In 1961, Reyes Monteón became the top scorer of the Mexican championship, with 21 goals in 25 games.
