Early Life and Career
Yunus Huseynov, a celebrated Azerbaijani footballer, embarked on his professional journey with Kyapaz. In 1984, he joined the renowned Baku club Neftchi, participating in the Soviet Union's top-tier league. However, his first goal came in 1987, in a domestic match against Kairat, which Neftchi won 6:0.
Breakthrough in the Soviet League
During the 1991 season in the Soviet First League, Huseynov emerged as the star striker, scoring 16 goals in 34 appearances. This impressive performance propelled him to become Neftchi's top scorer alongside teammate Velli Kasumov.
Rise in the Azerbaijani League
In the inaugural Azerbaijani Premier League in 1992, Huseynov excelled, scoring 29 goals in just 25 matches. After a brief spell in Iran during the 1992/93 season, he returned to Neftchi, where he spent the next six years, amassing over 100 appearances.
Champions League and European Adventure
In 1998, Huseynov rejoined Kyapaz and played in the UEFA Champions League qualifying rounds. He then signed for ANS Pivani in the 1999/2000 season. In August 2000, he returned to Kyapaz, representing the club in both the domestic league and the UEFA Cup. He retired from professional football at the end of the 2000/01 season.
National Team and Coaching Career
From 1993 to 1998, Huseynov proudly represented the Azerbaijani national team. His coaching career began with Karvan in 2004, where he served as both the club's founder and head coach. Under his guidance, Karvan achieved impressive results, earning the bronze medal in the 2004/05 season and the silver medal in 2005/06.
Silver Medal Success at Khazar Lankaran
In March 2012, Huseynov became the head coach of Khazar Lankaran, following the dismissal of Turkish manager Cüneyt Bicer. Under his leadership, the club captured the silver medal in the league. However, after a disappointing start to the subsequent season, Huseynov was dismissed.
Return to Khazar Lankaran as Sporting Director
In September 2014, Huseynov was appointed as the sporting director of Khazar Lankaran. In June 2015, he returned as the club's head coach, this time on a short-term basis.
