Salvatore Aronica: Italian Defender
Early CareerSalvatore Aronica is an Italian footballer who played as a central defender. He began his career at Bagaria before being acquired by Juventus in 1996. However, he only made one appearance for the Turin club, playing against Sampdoria in a 2-0 victory on February 15, 1998.
Loan Spells and Serie C
After his brief stint at Juventus, Aronica was loaned to Reggina in July 1998, where he played in two Coppa Italia matches. In October of that year, he moved to Serie C1 club Crotone, where he made 107 appearances.
Ascoli and Messina
Following the 2002/03 season with Ascoli, Aronica joined Messina. He spent three seasons there, playing in 102 matches.
Napoli and Palermo
On September 1, 2008, Aronica transferred to Napoli for a fee of €2.7 million. He made his debut against Fiorentina on September 14, but Napoli lost 2-1. In December 2012, he signed with Palermo on a contract until June 30, 2015.
Controversies
Aronica faced accusations of racism in March 2007 when Lazio player Stephen Makinwa alleged that Aronica had called him a racial slur. Aronica denied the allegations.
In March 2009, Aronica's name surfaced in an investigation into match-fixing by Palermo organized by the mafia. However, the investigation was later dropped in September of that year due to the statute of limitations expiring.
