Biography of Sam Cassell

Sam Cassell is an American retired professional basketball player who played as a point guard. He studied and played basketball at Paul Lawrence Dunbar High School. Sam had aspirations of attending DePaul University, but he was denied admission due to academic underperformance. San Jacinto College representatives were more lenient, and he soon played for the humble Texas university. After his freshman year, Sam transferred to Florida State University, where he averaged 18.3 points, 4.9 assists, and 4.3 rebounds per game.

NBA Career

In 1993, Cassell was selected as the 24th overall pick by the Houston Rockets. He won two championships in his first two years in the league. However, after this successful start, Sam's performance slightly declined as he played for the Phoenix Suns, Dallas Mavericks, and New Jersey Nets. In 1999, Cassell became a part of the Milwaukee Bucks, coached by George Karl, and joined a talented group of players including Glenn Robinson and Ray Allen. Despite reaching the Eastern Conference Finals, they were unable to secure a championship.

Minnesota Timberwolves

In 2003, Cassell joined the Minnesota Timberwolves. In Minnesota, Sam formed a powerful offensive trio with forward Kevin Garnett and guard Latrell Sprewell. During that season, the team achieved its greatest success, finishing first in their division and reaching the Western Conference Finals, where they were defeated by the Los Angeles Lakers. While playing for the Timberwolves, Sam was selected for his first NBA All-Star Game in Los Angeles.

Later Career

In 2005, Cassell moved to the Los Angeles Clippers, becoming one of their key players. Thanks in large part to his performances, the 2005/06 season was their best in recent history. However, the team's results declined in subsequent years, and they slid down the standings. In 2008, the Boston Celtics, in their quest to create a super trio consisting of Garnett, Paul Pierce, and Ray Allen, invited Cassell to join the team. The title they won in 2008 allowed Sam to end his player career on a high note.

Post-Retirement

Currently, Cassell serves as an assistant coach for the Washington Wizards under head coach Flip Saunders, whom they previously worked with as player and coach in Minnesota.
