Early Life and Acting Aspirations
Samuel George "Sam" Claflin was born on June 27, 1986, in Ipswich, Suffolk, England. He is the third of four sons born to Mark, a financial manager, and Sue, a teacher. His younger brother, Joseph, is also an actor.

Growing up in Norwich, Sam developed a passion for football and dedicated himself to the sport. However, an ankle injury during a match shattered his dreams of a professional football career.

While attending secondary school, Claflin participated in a school play. His performance impressed both his parents and a teacher, who encouraged him to pursue acting.

Acting Education and Early Roles
In 2003, Sam enrolled in acting classes at Norwich City College before studying at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art, graduating in 2009.

Claflin made his acting debut on the small screen in 2010 with roles in the miniseries "Pillars of the Earth" and the drama "Any Human Heart." In 2011, he was cast as a missionary in love with a mermaid in "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides," a role that earned him a nomination for Best Male Newcomer at the 17th Empire Awards.

Breakthrough and Critical Acclaim
Claflin's breakthrough role came in 2012 when he landed the role of Finnick Odair in the "Hunger Games" film series, starting with "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire." Director Francis Lawrence described Claflin's portrayal as "a very interesting character. At first, Sam looks like he's just a flirt and having a little bit of fun, and there's a little bit of sexual chemistry there."

"But you really fall in love with this guy and you see that there's a really deep, emotional part of him. That's the main reason I cast him as Finnick, who in the next couple of movies really opens up in a way that Sam does in real life. I think he's done a fantastic job."
The sequel was released in November 2013 to mostly positive critical reviews, with Claflin's performance being praised. He reprised his role in "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1" and "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2."
Romantic Comedies and Dramatic Roles
In 2013, Sam starred in the romantic comedy "Love, Rosie" and the drama "Mary and Martha." He received critical acclaim for his portrayal of Oxford University student Alistair Ryle in the British drama thriller "The Riot Club." Charlotte O'Sullivan of the London Evening Standard wrote that Claflin "is superb as the seethingly angry Alistair."
Claflin reprised his role as Snow White's childhood friend in the fantasy "The Huntsman Winter's War." He also starred in the drama "Me Before You" and the comedy "Their Finest Hour and a Half."
Upcoming Projects
Currently, Sam is filming the drama "My Cousin Rachel" with Rachel Weisz and is rumored to appear in William Nunez's drama "The Laureate."
Personal Life
Claflin began dating actress Laura Haddock in 2011. He claims to have contacted his agent shortly after meeting her, saying, "I'm going to marry that girl."
The couple married in a private ceremony in July 2013 and reside in London. In November 2015, Sam and Laura announced they were expecting their first child.
