Early Life and Career
Born on April 29, 1971, in Western Australia, Sam Michael spent his childhood in Canberra. After graduating from the University of South Wales, he joined a team in Australia's Formula Holden racing series.
Formula 1 Beginnings
Michael's Formula 1 debut came in 1993 with the ailing Lotus team. Following its bankruptcy, he moved to the research and development department of Jordan.
Technical Expertise in Jordan
In 1997, Michael joined Jordan's testing department and became a race engineer for Ralf Schumacher the following year. In 1999, Heinz-Harald Frentzen replaced Schumacher, with Michael serving as his race engineer. That season proved to be Jordan's most successful, with Frentzen winning two Grand Prix.
Rise to Technical Director at Williams
Michael joined Williams in 2001, overseeing race and test engineering operations. In 2004, he became technical director, succeeding team co-founder Patrick Head.
Sporting Director at McLaren
In 2012, Michael moved to McLaren as sporting director. He remained in that role until the end of the 2014 season.
Departure from McLaren
On October 22, 2014, McLaren announced that Michael would leave the team at the end of the year.
