Biography of Samantha Cristoforetti

Samantha Cristoforetti, an Italian astronaut for the European Space Agency, Air Force pilot, engineer, and polyglot, is the first Italian woman to access space. Born on April 26, 1977, in Milan, Italy, she grew up in Male, a town in the Italian province of Trento. From a young age, Cristoforetti had a strong passion for science fiction and a dream of conquering the sky. Determined to fulfill her dreams, she studied aerospace engineering at various universities around the world.

Cristoforetti's dissertation focused on topics such as solid rocket propellant, lightweight structures, and aerodynamics. Her education also included travels and the study of foreign languages. She became fluent in German, French, English, and Russian, and currently, she is learning Chinese. In 2001, she obtained a master's degree in mechanical engineering from the Technical University of Munich in Germany, specializing in aerospace engines and lightweight structures.

As part of her extensive training, Cristoforetti spent four months at the National School of Aviation and Space in Toulouse, France, working on an experimental aerodynamics project. She also conducted a 10-month research project on solid rocket propellant at the D.I. Mendeleev Russian Chemical Technology University in Moscow. In 2005, she earned a bachelor's degree in aeronautical sciences from the University of Naples Federico II, where she received the "Honorary Sword" for her outstanding academic performance.

From 2005 to 2006, Cristoforetti served at the Shepard Air Force Base in Texas, USA, as part of a joint Euro-NATO training program for jet pilots. She became a fighter pilot and joined the 132nd Squadron of the 51st Bomber Wing based in Istrana. Later, in 2008, she joined the 101st Squadron of the 32nd Bomber Wing in Foggia, where she completed her operational training for piloting the AM-X attack fighter. Cristoforetti is now a Captain in the Italian Air Force, with over 500 flight hours on six different military aircraft types.

In May 2009, Cristoforetti was selected as an astronaut by the European Space Agency. She completed the agency's basic astronaut training program by November 2010. In July 2012, the Italian Space Agency assigned her to a mission on board the International Space Station (ISS). On November 23, 2014, she embarked on her first flight as a flight engineer of the main crew on the Soyuz TMA-15M spacecraft, launched from Baikonur, Kazakhstan. Her mission, named "Futura," lasted 200 days, making it the second-longest mission for the Italian Space Agency and the eighth-longest for a European Space Agency astronaut.

During her mission, Cristoforetti performed various tasks, including installing a new water pump in the Columbus laboratory and upgrading the video recording system on the ISS. She also shared her experiences and demonstrated the process of preparing food in microgravity through a video. Food plays a crucial role in maintaining the psychological well-being of astronauts, and they are allowed to bring a limited amount of their favorite food to space. In the video, Cristoforetti combines various food items on a tortilla, showcasing the challenges of eating in microgravity.
