Sami Salo is a Finnish athlete and professional hockey player who has been playing for the Vancouver Canucks in the National Hockey League since 2002. He was born on September 2, 1974 in Turku, Finland. Standing at a height of 191 cm and weighing 92 kg, Salo plays as a defenseman and wears jersey number 6. He is right-handed. Salo is married and has two children, a daughter named Julia and a son named Oliver.
Early Life and Career
Sami Salo was born and raised in Turku, one of the oldest cities in Finland, founded by Novgorod merchants. This is where the ancient name of the city - Torg - comes from. Salo began his sporting career in his hometown, playing three seasons (from 1994 to 1997) for the TPS team in the Finnish ice hockey league SM-liiga. In the 1996 NHL Draft, Sami Salo was selected by the Ottawa Senators in the ninth round, 239th overall. However, he stayed in Europe for another season, playing for Jokerit in the SM-liiga. In his final season in Finland, Salo scored only 8 points and 1 point in the playoffs.
Professional Career
Sami Salo made his debut with the Ottawa Senators in the 1998-99 season at the age of 24. He scored 7 goals and made 12 assists, totaling 19 points. Salo was named to the NHL All-Rookie Team that season. His first NHL goal came in the 27th game against the Boston Bruins. In his first season with the Senators, Salo played in 61 games. The following season, he added 14 points in 37 games, including a hat-trick against the Pittsburgh Penguins on March 30, 1999. However, numerous injuries prevented him from playing more games. Salo played four seasons with the Senators, demonstrating not only his physical style of play, but also his ability to withstand strong injuries. In his second season, he missed 45 games. In the 2000-01 season, Salo was sidelined due to the flu, shoulder, leg, and knee injuries. He suffered a severe concussion and lost teeth in a game against the Philadelphia Flyers in March 2000. Just before the start of the next season, Sami injured his groin in an exhibition game against the Toronto Maple Leafs.
In July 2002, Salo signed a one-year contract worth 880,000 dollars with the Senators. However, in September 2002, he was traded to the Vancouver Canucks for forward Peter Schaefer. The Canucks saw Salo as a strong defenseman with a powerful playing style. From the moment of his transfer, Salo proved to be one of the most active defensemen on the team. In his first season with the Canucks (2002-03), he played in 79 games, earning 30 points (9 goals + 21 assists). Vancouver promptly extended Salo's contract for two years, offering him 3.2 million dollars. During the 2004-05 lockout, Salo played for Frölunda in Sweden. Upon returning to the NHL, he signed another two-year contract with the Canucks, but once again missed games due to old injuries. Even at the 2006 Olympics, playing for the Finnish national team, he managed to injure his shoulder. Despite missing 15 games in the 2006-07 season, Salo still earned 37 points (14 goals + 23 assists). In March 2007, he signed a four-year contract extension with the Canucks worth 14 million dollars. However, the 2007-08 season brought him only 25 points in 19 games, as he was absent due to health issues. Unfortunately, a similar situation occurred in the next two seasons, but Salo was selected to represent the Finnish Olympic team.
