Biography of Sammy Baugh

Sammy Baugh, born on March 17, 1914, on a farm near Temple, Texas, was an American football player. He was the middle child in a family of three and grew up in the town of Sweetwater after his parents divorced.

Early Life and College

Baugh completed his high school education in Sweetwater and then attended Texas Christian University. While in college, Baugh played baseball and even won a state championship with the youth team. It was during this time that he also developed a love for football.

At Texas Christian University, Baugh participated in youth competitions in baseball, football, and basketball. Although he excelled in football, Baugh had a greater passion for baseball. After graduating from university, Baugh intended to sign a contract with a local baseball team in St. Louis.

Football Career

However, the coach of the newly relocated football team, the Washington Redskins, made Baugh an unprecedented offer in those days - $8,000 per year plus $500 for travel expenses. At that time, professional football players earned just over $2,000 per year. Baugh decided to leave his baseball career behind and became a professional player for the Washington Redskins in 1937.

Baugh played as a quarterback for the team for sixteen seasons, from 1937 to 1952. He set an incredible number of records, some of which remain unbeaten to this day. He won the championship three times with his team and was named the best quarterback for three consecutive years from 1940 to 1943. Baugh was also frequently included in the All-Star team.

In 1963, Baugh was inducted into the Professional Football Hall of Fame. Apart from his football career, Baugh also appeared in the Hollywood series "King of the Texas Rangers" in 1941.

Later Life

After retiring from playing football, Baugh worked as a coach. He initially coached at a small college from 1952 to 1959, and then spent a year each with the New York Titans and Houston Oilers. He fully retired from the sport in 1968.

Baugh purchased a ranch in East Texas and lived there with his wife, Edmonia, four sons, and a daughter. He passed away in a hospital in Rotan, Texas, near his ranch, on December 17, 2008.
