Samuel Edward Konkin III
Founding a New Libertarian MovementSamuel Edward Konkin III, the author of the "New Libertarian Manifesto," espoused a political philosophy known as agorism, a branch of market anarchism. Inspired by Murray Rothbard, Robert LeFevre, and Ludwig von Mises, Konkin reimagined libertarianism as a left-wing movement.
He founded the Agorist Institute and the Movement of Libertarian Left. As a co-founder of the Libertarian Futurist Society, he established the annual Prometheus Awards, recognizing libertarian science fiction and fantasy works.
Rejecting Elections and Party Politics
Konkin vehemently opposed elections, believing them incompatible with libertarian ethics. He also rejected involvement in the Libertarian Party, viewing it as an attempt to integrate libertarianism with the state.
The New Libertarian Manifesto
In his "New Libertarian Manifesto," Konkin outlined his vision for a libertarian society. Advocating for a complete break from the established system, he encouraged individuals to move their economic activities to "black or gray markets" outside the reach of government taxation and regulation.
Editorial Contributions
Konkin published several libertarian periodicals, including "New Libertarian Notes," "New Libertarian Weekly," and "New Libertarian," from 1971 to 1990.
Criticism
Anarcho-syndicalist Ulrike Heider criticized Konkin in her work "Anarchism: Left, Right and Green." While Konkin rejected Holocaust denial, he defended the Institute for Historical Review, arguing for the importance of free speech.
