Biography of Sandra Torres Colom

Sandra Torres Colom is the First Lady of Guatemala. She was born in Melchor de Mencos, Petén department, Guatemala. She holds a degree in Communication Sciences from the University San Carlos de Guatemala and a master's degree in Public Policy from the University Rafael Landívar de Guatemala. Her mother tongue is Spanish, and she is fluent in English. Currently, she is studying K'iche', one of the main Mayan languages spoken in Guatemala.

Career in Social Development

Sandra Torres has dedicated a significant part of her professional career to promoting policies, plans, programs, projects, and laws in the field of social development, particularly regarding women, children, and people with disabilities. Within her ruling political party, the National Unity of Hope (Unidad Nacional de la Esperanza, UNE), she has been instrumental in advancing legal initiatives, such as the "Femicide Law," approved in the first semester of 2008, and the "Parental Responsibility Law," approved in August 2008.

She founded the National Women's Coordinator, a political block within the UNE party, which represents the demands of over thirty thousand Guatemalan women, including the Garifuna and Xinca ethnicities.

Entrepreneurship and Corporate Experience

Sandra Torres Colom has also worked as an entrepreneur in private companies, where she was responsible for textile production and managing sewing factories.

First Lady of Guatemala

As the First Lady of Guatemala, Sandra Torres Colom continues to work for the benefit of Guatemalan society, particularly vulnerable groups such as women, children, youth, retirees, and people with disabilities. She has served as the President of the Council for Social Cohesion (Consejo de Cohesión Social), an organization responsible for directing social investments to eradicate extreme poverty and combat poverty as a whole.

Under her leadership, the organization has developed several programs and projects aimed at increasing access to and improving the quality of education, healthcare, infrastructure development, stability, and national reconstruction. For example, the programs include initiatives for reconstructing areas affected by hurricanes and landslides.

Political Ambitions

On March 8, 2011, Sandra Torres Colom publicly agreed to become a presidential candidate for the National Unity of Hope party in the upcoming 2011 elections. Despite being barred by Article 186 of the Constitution, which prohibits close relatives of the current head of state from running for president, the interpretation of this constitutional article will be determined by the Constitutional Court of Guatemala. It is expected that the government will appoint judges who support Sandra Torres' ambitions, even though the article does not leave room for interpretation.
