Angelica Singleton Van Buren: The First Lady of the United States
Born in Wedgefield, South Carolina, Angelica Singleton was the daughter of Richard Singleton and Rebecca Travis Coles. Raised in high society, she brought a new level of refinement to the White House, elevating the role of the First Lady.
Marriage to Abraham Van Buren
On February 14, 1838, Angelica married Abraham Van Buren, the son of President Martin Van Buren. When Martin Van Buren lost the 1841 presidential election, Angelica and Abraham moved into his home in Lindenwald, Kinderhook, New York.
Support for Martin Van Buren
After the death of his wife, Martin Van Buren remained a widower for the rest of his life. Angelica and Abraham provided him with unwavering support, keeping him company and easing his loneliness. They also cared for him as he had no other close relatives.
Later Life
From 1848 onward, Angelica lived in New York City. She wintered at the Singleton family home in South Carolina. Upon her death, she was laid to rest at Singleton's Graveyard.
