Biography of Sandrine Bailly

Sandrine Bailly, a biathlete, was born on November 25, 1979, in the town of Belle in southeastern France. The region where Sandrine grew up was renowned for its sporting traditions, and her father, who was also involved in cross-country skiing during his youth, further fueled her interest in the sport. It is no surprise, then, that she started skiing at a very young age.

By the age of 15, the young athlete had achieved significant success in cross-country skiing. However, during one of her training sessions, her coach Pascal Etienne suggested that she try her hand at biathlon. Sandrine was immediately captivated by this new sport, as it was more unpredictable than cross-country skiing. From the age of 16, she devoted herself entirely to biathlon.

For several years, Bailly competed as part of the French junior national team in various competitions and European Cup stages. In 2000, she made her debut in the World Cup. The following season, at just 21 years old, she regularly participated in these competitions and won her first medals. Her unexpected victory in the individual race on the third stage in Antholz, where she made only one mistake, surpassed the achievements of renowned athletes such as Corinne Niogret and Magdalena Forsberg. Additionally, Sandrine showcased her talent as a sprinter, making it to the podium twice throughout the season.

Since then, Bailly has amassed an impressive collection of medals in World Cup stages, with 24 of them (20 in individual events and 4 in relays) being of the highest caliber. The 2004/05 season was particularly successful for her, as she won three pursuit races, two sprints, and one mass start race. In a fierce competition, Bailly surpassed Olga Pyleva and Kati Wilhelm on points during the final stage and claimed the Big Crystal Globe. She also won the Small Crystal Globe in pursuit races that season. In the 2005/06 season, Bailly continued to triumph in World Cup stages, making her one of the favorites for the Olympic Games in Turin. However, her shooting performance let her down, and she failed to reach the podium in the individual rankings. In the relay race, the French team (with Bailly running the fourth leg, as usual) secured the bronze medal.

In the 2007/08 season, the French biathlete demonstrated excellent form, winning four sprint races and pursuit races, and leading the overall standings two stages before the end of the season. However, a poor performance in the mass start race (8 missed shots and 20th place) during the penultimate stage in Khanty-Mansiysk allowed her main rival, Magdalena Neuner, to surpass her. Despite this, Sandrine secured her second Small Crystal Globe in pursuit races. Despite her remarkable results in World Cup stages, Bailly has had modest performances in World Championships, with only one gold medal (shared with Martina Glagow in the pursuit race in Khanty-Mansiysk) and two bronze medals throughout her career. She also won two bronze and one silver medal in relay races.
