Early Life and Education

Sarah Ahmed was born in City of Salford, Greater Manchester, England, to a Pakistani father and an English mother. In the early 1970s, her family emigrated to Adelaide, Australia. Her experiences as a migrant growing up shaped her research interests in migration, orientation, and difference. Ahmed graduated from the University of Adelaide and earned her PhD in Critical and Cultural Theory from Cardiff University.

Academic Career

From 1994 to 2004, Ahmed worked at Lancaster University's Institute for Women's Studies, where she served as its director. In 2004, she was appointed Professor of Media and Communications at Goldsmiths College, University of London, where she established the Centre for Feminist Research.

In 2009, Ahmed became Distinguished Professor of Women's and Gender Studies at Rutgers University. In 2013, she held the Real Women Professorship in Gender Studies at the University of Cambridge. In 2015, she was the keynote speaker at the National Women's Studies Association's annual conference.

Advocacy and Activism

Ahmed is a lesbian and an outspoken advocate for LGBTQ+ rights. In 2016, she resigned from her position at Goldsmiths College in protest over the university's handling of sexual harassment allegations. She has emphasized the need for accountability and transparency in addressing such issues.

Research and Publications

Ahmed's research focuses on feminist, queer, critical race, and postcolonial theory. Her work explores themes of migration, orientation, difference, and their intersections. Her key publications include:
