Sarah Ashurbeyli: A Prominent Azerbaijani Historian
Early Life and FamilySary Ashurbeyli was born into a distinguished Azerbaijani family. Her father, Balabak Ashurbekov, traced his lineage to the ancient Ashurkhana Afshar clan, related to Nadir Shah. A prominent oil industrialist and philanthropist, he played a significant role in pre-Soviet Azerbaijan.
During the Soviet era, the family emigrated to Turkey, where Sary Ashurbeyli received her early education at the French College Sainte-Jeanne d'Arc in Istanbul. After the New Economic Policy (NEP), the family returned to Soviet Azerbaijan, where her father was subjected to political persecution. He was arrested and sent to the Karaganda labor camp, where he was executed in 1937.
Education and Career Struggles
Despite her family background, Ashurbeyli pursued her passion for history. She graduated from the University of Azerbaijan with a degree in Oriental Studies. However, she initially faced obstacles in securing employment due to her origin. She worked as a high school teacher, theater decorator, and foreign language instructor at the Azerbaijan Conservatory.
Breakthrough and Recognition
In 1949, Ashurbeyli successfully defended her doctoral dissertation at the Leningrad Institute of Oriental Studies. With the support of Samad Vurghun, Vice President of the Azerbaijan Academy of Sciences, she secured a research position at the Museum of Azerbaijan History.
Her contributions to the field of history were recognized with the award of the State Prize of the Azerbaijan SSR. She became a member of the Union of Artists of Azerbaijan and a senior research fellow at the Institute of History of the Azerbaijan Academy of Sciences.
Notable Achievements
Ashurbeyli is renowned for her extensive research on Azerbaijani history. She published approximately 100 articles for the Azerbaijani encyclopedia. Her groundbreaking work established her as a leading authority on the medieval history of Azerbaijan. From 1993 until her passing, she held the position of senior research fellow at the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnography of the Azerbaijan Academy of Sciences.
