Biography of Sarah Chang
Sarah Chang is an American violinist of Korean origin. She was born into a family of musicians who immigrated to the United States in 1979. Her father is a violinist, and her mother is a composer. Sarah began learning to play the violin at the age of four.
Education and Early Career
She studied at the Juilliard School under Dorothy DeLay, whose other students include Itzhak Perlman, Gil Shaham, Shlomo Mintz, and many others, including Sarah's father. At the age of nine, Sarah recorded her debut album "Debut". She has performed with renowned orchestras in Europe and the United States, conducted by Daniel Barenboim, Colin Davis, Bernard Haitink, Zubin Mehta, Riccardo Muti, Andre Previn, Simon Rattle, and others. Sarah has also played in ensembles with Martha Argerich, Yefim Bronfman, Leif Ove Andsnes, Yo-Yo Ma, Isaac Stern, Lynn Harrell, and Lars Vogt.
Repertoire and Awards
Sarah Chang's repertoire includes works by Vivaldi, European romantics such as Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Brahms, Tchaikovsky, Dvorak, Sibelius, Richard Strauss, Ravel, Prokofiev, Shostakovich, and more. She has received numerous international awards, including the Gramophone "Young Artist of the Year" award in 1993, the Avery Fisher Prize in 1999, and the Kigji International Music Academy Prize in Siena in 2004, among others.
