Pregnancy Tragedy: Midwife's Negligence Costs Two Lives
Sarina Ali, a 27-year-old expectant mother, tragically lost her life along with her unborn child due to the gross negligence of midwife Rebecca Matowu at the Queen's Hospital in Romford, Essex.
Unresponsive to Pleas
Despite Ali's excruciating pain and the desperate pleas of her husband and brother, Matowu repeatedly ignored their calls for help. She remained indifferent even when the family began banging on the door of the labor ward.
Emergency Intervention
Finally, Ali underwent an emergency cesarean section, but her child died shortly after birth. The mother lingered on life support for five days before succumbing to a ruptured uterus and multiple organ failure.
Systemic Failure
A subsequent inquest in 2011 found that staff at the maternity ward of Queen's Hospital, one of the UK's busiest, had displayed a "catalogue of failures."
Midwife's Accountability
At the NMC hearing, Clive Powell, head of the Health and Care Professions Council, denounced Matowu's actions: "By ignoring the concerns of the patient's husband, Ms Matowu failed the very people she was there to care for. This was particularly serious given her position as a midwife and the duty of care she held."
Missed Signs
Powell emphasized that as a senior midwife, Matowu should have recognized the worsening situation. Even if her shift had formally ended, he said, she had a duty to assist her colleagues and ascertain whether her expertise was required.
Victim's Journey
Sarina Ali, a sales assistant at Harrods department store, was admitted to the hospital on January 23, 2011, having exceeded her due date by two weeks. She arrived with her husband, Usman Javed, a mortgage advisor, at 10:00 AM, and by 7:05 PM, she was in distress.
Dismissive Responses
Ali's husband made three frantic pleas for help to the labor ward, only to be met with dismissive responses from Matowu and her team. He recalled: "The midwife just laughed and said that when my wife went into labor, she wouldn't know what had hit her." Another staff member asked, "Haven't you read any books? What have you been doing for the last nine months?"
Confrontation and Aftermath
Matowu ultimately left for home before a resuscitation team arrived to assist Ali. At 10:05 PM, attempts were made to resuscitate Ali, who had previously suffered a miscarriage. The baby, delivered by cesarean, showed no signs of life. Ali herself passed away shortly afterward.
Matowu's Defense and Punishment
When questioned in court, Matowu claimed that she had handed the patient over to other staff upon leaving the hospital and was no longer the "midwife in charge." However, at the NMC hearing, she failed to provide a coherent account of Ali's condition.
Incredibly, after the hearing, Matowu received only a three-month suspension.
