Sasha Benecken: German Luge Champion, Musician, and Advocate
Early Life and Sport InitiationSasha Benecken (born July 22, 1989) is a retired German luger and former musician. His journey began in a sports club for children, where he later transitioned to handball and eventually to luge in 1999. From 1996 to 2009, Benecken attended school and specialized in luge at the Sports Gymnasium in Oberhof.

Junior Luge Career
In 2003, Benecken joined the Sports Gymnasium's luge team as a rear brakeman. He became a member of the junior national team in 2008 and won the overall Junior World Cup title. In 2009, he secured his second World Junior title and placed second overall in the World Cup. His consistent performances earned him a spot in the German national team.
World Cup Debut and Championships
In the 2010/2011 season, Benecken teamed up with Toni Eggert for the World Cup circuit. Together, they achieved a sixth-place finish in their World Cup debut. At the 2011 World Championships, they placed 10th.
In the following years, the duo climbed the podium multiple times in World Cup races. In 2012, they won gold in the team relay event at the World Championships and captured a bronze medal in the doubles competition. At the 2013 European Championships, they secured gold in both the doubles and team events.
Musical Pursuits
Alongside his luge career, Benecken pursued music from a young age. He played the recorder and learned to play the guitar at 13. He formed a band called "Unkreativ" and later "Plexik." Benecken composed songs and performed live with his band, even contributing to the official title track for the 2008 World Luge Championships.
Community Involvement and Advocacy
Benecken actively supports various charitable initiatives. He has performed at benefit concerts and serves as a patron of the "White Ring" organization, which promotes child protection. He also engages in youth sports events and marketing campaigns for the luge team in his hometown of Suhl.
