Early Life and Military Service

Sergei Nikolayevich Kurmanayev was born into the Berish clan in the Kazakh Soviet Socialist Republic. He graduated from the Riga Military Infantry School and went on to serve in the Great Patriotic War.

Academic and Political Career

In 1949, Kurmanayev completed his studies at Kazakh State University. He then attended the Republican Party School of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Kazakhstan, where he earned a Candidate of Historical Sciences degree.

Rise to Prominence

Kurmanayev's political career began in 1946 as an instructor for the Aktyubinsk Oblast Committee of the Communist Party of Kazakhstan. Over the next decade, he held various positions within the party, including as Deputy Head of the Propaganda and Agitation Department of the Central Committee.

Leadership Roles

In 1961, Kurmanayev was appointed Secretary of the Celin Kraikom (Regional Committee) of the Communist Party of Kazakhstan. He later became Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Kazakhstan for Ideology (1965-1979).

Top Government Positions

From 1975 to 1979, Kurmanayev served as Chairman of the Supreme Soviet of the Kazakh SSR. He then held the position of Chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Kazakh SSR (1979-1984) and concurrently Deputy Chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR (1980-1984).

Political Affiliations

Kurmanayev was a member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Kazakhstan (1965-1984) and its Presidium (1965-1966). He was also a member of the Central Auditing Commission of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (1976-1981) and a Member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (1981-1984).

Later Years and Legacy

Kurmanayev served as a Deputy in the Supreme Soviet of the Kazakh SSR from 1963 to 1984 and in the Supreme Soviet of the USSR from 1970 to 1974 and 1979 to 1984. He passed away on February 22, 1984, and was buried at the central cemetery in Alma-Ata.

Honors and Recognition

Throughout his career, Sergei Nikolayevich Kurmanayev received numerous awards and honors, including the Order of Lenin, the Order of the October Revolution, the Order of the Red Banner of Labor (twice), and the Order of the Red Star.
