Early Life and Education
Khoz-Akhmed Tashtamirovich Nuhayev was born on November 11, 1954, in Central Asia, where his family had been deported along with other Chechens since 1944. In 1974, he enrolled in the Law Faculty of Moscow State University. There, he co-founded the underground Committee for the Independence of Chechnya with fellow Chechen students, serving as its finance director and head of security.
Political Activism
During the 1980s, Nuhayev faced imprisonment for his advocacy for Chechnya's liberation. Despite his incarceration, he remained actively involved in the movement. In 1985, he organized a protest demonstration in prison to commemorate the anniversary of the Stalinist deportation, facing harsh punishment as a result.
Post-Release
After his release in 1987, Nuhayev established businesses and community organizations for Chechens in Moscow and other Soviet regions. In 1989, he joined the Vaynakh "Bart" Jamaat ("Unity"), which sought to establish the Vaynakh Democratic Party (VDP) to achieve Chechen independence. In 1990, Nuhayev was arrested while serving as the VDP's security chief.
Service under Dudayev
In 1991, Nuhayev escaped from prison with the assistance of his father and allies of Dzhokhar Dudayev. In 1994, shortly before the outbreak of the First Chechen War, Nuhayev was appointed Head of the Foreign Intelligence Service. His unit participated in the initial battle for Grozny. In January 1995, Nuhayev was wounded while defending the presidential palace.
Post-War Activities
In 1996, Nuhayev became the First Vice-Premier of the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria. He was awarded the Order of "Qoman Siy" ("Honor of the Nation") for his contributions to the republic. After the war, Nuhayev pursued regional policies in the Caucasus, promoting the establishment of a Caucasian Common Market and the Eurasian Union of Villages to foster economic cooperation and preserve traditional lifestyles.
Intellectual and Religious Pursuits
From 1998 onwards, Nuhayev focused on academic research, publishing several books and articles exploring religion and society. He founded the "Nokhchi Latt Islam" public movement and developed a blueprint for Chechnya's reconstruction. In 1999, he performed the Hajj pilgrimage. Subsequently, he established the interfaith movement "Hanif" and the "Variss" Foundation for Closed Society.
