Schubert Gambetta: The Uruguayan Legend
Schubert Gambetta, a legendary Uruguayan footballer, was born to Elias Gambetta, an immigrant from Liguria, and his Uruguayan wife. He began his career at age 20 with Nacional, playing as a right-wing midfielder in a 2-3-5 formation common at the time. Today, this position is known as a "lateral" or "full-back."
Golden Quinquennium and Colombian Stint
From 1940 to 1948 and again from 1950 to 1956, Gambetta played for Nacional, winning 10 Uruguayan championships during this period. He arrived at the club during their "Golden Quinquennium," helping them win five consecutive titles, a feat unmatched in Nacional's history. In 1949, he briefly played for Cucuta Deportivo in Colombia, a team that boasted international stars from Uruguay, Argentina, England, Scotland, and other countries.
International Success
Gambetta represented Uruguay on 36 occasions between 1941 and 1952, scoring three goals. In 1950, he triumphed as a World Cup champion, one of the few Nacional players in a team dominated by Penarol. He also won the 1942 South American Championship with Uruguay.
A Unique Feint
Gambetta is renowned for his signature move, a dribbling maneuver that allowed him to outplay opponents in tight spaces. The feint became known as the "Gambetta," with a single "t."
Later Career and Legacy
After retiring from Nacional, Gambetta briefly played for Mar de Fondo in 1960. He passed away in 1991 at the age of 71, leaving behind a daughter, Andrea, and a son, Alejandro. Gambetta's legacy as one of the greatest defenders in Uruguayan and world football remains unparalleled.
