Early Life and EducationScott Bradley's musical journey began with training at the conservatory under the tutelage of renowned composer Arnold Schoenberg. In the early 1930s, he ventured into composing music for Ab Iwerks, an animator formerly associated with Walt Disney.
MGM Career
Bradley's career took a significant turn in 1934 when he began composing for Hugh Harman and Rudolf Ising, who produced short animated films for MGM. In 1937, Bradley was hired by MGM on a permanent basis, where he remained until his retirement.
Innovative Music for Animation
During his tenure at MGM, Bradley's musical style evolved from incorporating popular and traditional melodies to becoming highly original and complex. He frequently utilized all twelve tones of the chromatic scale, a technique pioneered by his mentor, Schoenberg. Bradley's compositions for the beloved "Tom and Jerry," Droopy Dog, Barney Bear, and Tex Avery's short films brought them to life with his signature musical flair.
Retirement and Legacy
Bradley retired in 1957 when MGM closed its animation division. He passed away on April 27, 1977, in Chatsworth, California. Bradley's musical contributions to animated films continue to inspire generations of composers and audiences alike. His innovative and intricate scores remain a testament to his exceptional talent and artistry.
