Scott Macartney: American Alpine Skier
Early Life and CareerScott Macartney, born on January 19, 1978, in Seattle, Washington, grew up in the Pacific Northwest. The son of ski patrollers, he was exposed to the sport early on. At the age of three, he began skiing, and by seven, he was competing in races at Crystal Mountain, a resort where his parents volunteered on weekends.
High School and College
Macartney attended Redmond High School and excelled in skiing. He earned several regional and national titles in slalom and super-G. In 1996, he graduated from high school and continued his skiing career at Dartmouth College, where he earned a bachelor's degree in economics.
Professional Career
Macartney made his World Cup debut in 1999. He quickly established himself as a strong performer, earning podium finishes twice. He also competed in two Olympic Games (2002 and 2006) and the World Championships. However, his career was marked by a series of injuries.
Injuries and Recovery
In 2001, Macartney suffered a concussion and a fractured tibial plateau. In 2007, he underwent surgery to address a floating kneecap and other injuries. Most notably, in 2008, he suffered a severe head injury during a crash in Kitzbühel, Austria. Despite these setbacks, Macartney returned to competition each time, demonstrating remarkable resilience.
Recent Career
In 2009, Macartney injured his left knee at the Lauberhorn downhill in Wengen, Switzerland, which forced him to miss the remainder of the season. He returned to form the following year but sustained a torn ACL in Wengen in January 2010. Despite the injuries, Macartney continued to compete until he finally retired in 2011.
Post-Retirement
After retiring from competitive skiing, Macartney remained involved in the sport. He worked as a ski coach and commentator. He also pursued his hobbies of mountain biking, surfing, and sushi. Macartney's tenacity, perseverance, and love for skiing have made him an inspiring figure in the sport.
