Scott Paul Carson is an English footballer who plays as a goalkeeper for Derby County and the England national team.
Early Life and Career
Born in Whitehaven, Cumbria, Carson grew up and attended school in Cleator Moor. In his youth, he showed talent in rugby but eventually decided to focus on football. He quickly became one of the best players for Cleator Moor Celtic.
In July 2002, Carson was accepted into the Leeds United Football Academy after impressing former Leeds defender Peter Hampton during a youth cup match. Within six months of joining the academy, Carson made his debut for the first team in January 2004, replacing Paul Robinson in a match against Middlesbrough.
Professional Career
Two weeks later, Carson made his first full appearance in a match against Manchester United. In May 2004, Robinson left Leeds and Scottish goalkeeper Neil Sullivan became Carson's main competition for a spot in the starting lineup. At the end of the year, Carson declined to extend his contract with Leeds and instead moved to Liverpool.
Signing a four-and-a-half-year contract with Liverpool, Carson competed with Jerzy Dudek for a place in the starting lineup. He made his debut for Liverpool in March 2005 against Newcastle United. Despite not playing in the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Super Cup finals, Carson received a medal for Liverpool's victories in those competitions in 2005.
In the 2005-2006 season, Carson only appeared in four matches and was loaned to Sheffield Wednesday in March 2006. He played a crucial role in helping the team avoid relegation, with Sheffield Wednesday winning five out of nine matches with Carson in goal. At the end of the season, Carson returned to Liverpool and extended his contract until 2011.
In August 2006, Carson was loaned to Charlton Athletic after the club's initial attempt to sign Norwich City goalkeeper Robert Green fell through. Liverpool supported the move as it provided Carson with additional experience. After his loan spell, Carson returned to Liverpool in 2008 but was later purchased by West Bromwich Albion for €3.25 million. He finally found stability at West Bromwich Albion and has been with the club since.
International Career
Carson has also represented England at the international level. He was first called up to the England U21 squad in October 2003 and made his debut in a match against the Netherlands in February 2004. Despite turning 21, Carson was called up again to the U21 squad in 2007.
