American artist Scott Prior was born in Exeter, New Hampshire, and raised in Northern California. In 1971, he settled in Northampton, Massachusetts, after completing a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Massachusetts. He also studied at the Academy of Art College in San Francisco.

Prior's early works were somewhat surreal, combining elements of science fiction, mythology, and Northern Renaissance art. However, in the 1980s, he shifted his focus towards contemporary realism and hyperrealism.
