Selma James: Marxist Feminist and Activist

Early Life and Activism

Selma James, a prominent Marxist feminist, was born in Brooklyn in 1930. From a young age, she worked in a factory and joined the Johnson-Forest Tendency at age 15. Her activism began in the Campaign Against Racial Discrimination and the Black Regional Action Movement.

"The Power of Women and the Subversion of the Community"

In 1955, James traveled to the United Kingdom where she married Trinidadian activist C.L.R. James. In 1972, she co-authored the seminal work "The Power of Women and the Subversion of the Community" with Mariarosa della Costa. The book challenged the unpaid nature of domestic labor, sparking a movement for housewives' rights.

Social Welfare for Housewives

James played a key role in organizations advocating for social welfare benefits for housewives. She was instrumental in securing such benefits in Venezuela, a revolution she has actively supported since 2002.

Criticism of Israeli Policy

In 2008, James signed an open letter published in The Guardian expressing her opposition to Israel's 60th anniversary celebrations. The letter, signed by British Jews, outlined their reasons for not commemorating the event.
