Karl Julius Adler
Austrian-Swiss cellist, composer, and music educator of German descent.
Early Life and Education
Born in Berlin, Karl Julius Adler studied composition with Dionys Weber and cello with Johann Baptist Hüttner at the Prague Conservatory. From 1840 to 1842, he served as principal cellist at the Lemberg City Theater. Adler then traveled to Vienna, where he continued his studies with Simon Sechter.
Career in Vienna
Adler taught at the Vienna Conservatory from 1851 to 1855. Afterwards, he established himself as a respected music critic in Vienna, reviewing the works of Robert Schumann and Johannes Brahms. In 1859, he became the editor of the "Allgemeine musikalische Zeitung," and from 1863 to 1868, he edited the "Neue Zeitschrift für Musik."
Basel Years
In 1868, Adler was appointed the first director of the Allgemeine Musikschule in Basel, a position he held until his death. From 1877, he also taught at the University of Basel, earning an honorary doctorate in philosophy in 1880.
Compositions and Writings
Adler composed four symphonies, two masses, and other choral works, as well as a piano concerto, chamber music, and songs. He also published books on Robert Schumann (1879) and Carl Maria von Weber (1884), as well as several educational and historical texts on music, including one dedicated to Joseph Joachim.
