Early Life and Education

Armenian Soviet theatre artist, graphic artist, and poster designer Semen Aladzhalov was born in Baku. In 1927, he enrolled at the Vkhutemas Institute in Moscow, where he studied under the renowned artists Georgy Fyodorov and Nikolay Shifrin.

Theatre Work

In 1924, Aladzhalov embarked on his career in theatre. He designed sets for numerous productions at the Armenian Drama Theatre, the Armenian Opera and Ballet Theatre, the Russian Drama Theatre in Yerevan, the Armenian Theatre in Moscow, and others.

Military Posters

During the Second World War (1941-1945), Aladzhalov created a series of propaganda posters known as "luboks" on military themes. Some of these were produced in collaboration with his brother, Stepan Aladzhalov.

Interior Design

In the 1940s and 1960s, Aladzhalov expanded his repertoire to include interior design. He designed interiors for various public buildings and exhibited his work at the Paris World Fair in 1937.

Legacy

Throughout his career, Semen Aladzhalov designed over 100 exhibitions and staged numerous theatre productions in cities across the Soviet Union, including Moscow, Yerevan, Vladimir, Leninakan, Dushanbe, Brest, and Sofia. He was awarded the title of Honored Artist of the Armenian SSR in 1962.
