Early Life and Military Career
Semen Mikheyevich Alyoshin was born in 1911 into a peasant family in the Tambov province. He joined the Red Army in 1932 and completed his training as a pilot at the Kachin Military Aviation School. Alyoshin participated in the Polish Campaign and the Soviet-Finnish War.
World War II
During the outbreak of World War II, Alyoshin was a squadron leader in the 44th Separate High-Speed Bomber Aviation Regiment on the Leningrad Front. On July 12, 1942, while carrying out a bombing mission near Lombolovo railway station, Alyoshin's aircraft was hit by enemy fire.
Heroic Sacrifice
Despite sustaining severe damage, Alyoshin refused to abandon his mission. Instead, he directed his burning plane towards enemy artillery batteries, crashing into them and causing significant damage. This act of selfless sacrifice resulted in the destruction of multiple artillery pieces and the scattering of enemy troops.
Posthumous Recognition
For his exceptional bravery and selflessness, Alyoshin was posthumously awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union by the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR on February 10, 1943. He was buried in a mass grave at Lombolovo station.
