Life and Career of Matvei Andreevich Yefimov
Matvei Andreevich Yefimov, a renowned fighter pilot and Guard Senior Lieutenant, played a pivotal role in World War II. Born in 1909 in the Smolensk region of Russia, Yefimov's early life was marked by service in the Red Army.
Pre-War Career
After completing technical training, Yefimov joined the Naval Air Force in 1931. He then graduated from the Yeisk Naval Aviation School and served as an instructor. With the onset of World War II, Yefimov was deployed to the Baltic Fleet, where he played a significant role in the defense of Leningrad.
Combat Exploits
As part of the 5th Fighter Aviation Regiment (later renamed the 3rd Guards Fighter Aviation Regiment), Yefimov conducted over 280 combat sorties. He shot down three aircraft in solo combat and another 19 in group battles. His bravery and leadership earned him the Hero of the Soviet Union title on June 14, 1942.
Recognition and Leadership
Yefimov's outstanding performance led to his appointment as Deputy Commander of the Regiment for Political Affairs in August 1942. Despite his new responsibilities, he continued to fly on hazardous missions, demonstrating exceptional skill and prowess in air combat. By January 1943, he had accumulated 352 combat sorties, destroying 38 enemy aircraft.
Final Days and Legacy
In January 1943, Yefimov volunteered to lead a mission to secure new aircraft for the regiment. However, during the flight, a malfunction occurred with the DB-3 bomber transporting him and his crew. The aircraft crashed, resulting in Yefimov's tragic death on January 7th.
