Early Life and Football Career
Semyon Altman was born on April 21, 1946, in Chuhuiv, Kharkiv Oblast, Ukraine. He began his football career in the youth academy of FC Dynamo Kyiv, where he played as a goalkeeper. After a brief stint with FC Koloskivnyk Rivne, he joined FC Volyn Lutsk in 1965.
In 1966, Altman made the move to FC Chornomorets Odessa, where he established himself as the team's starting goalkeeper. He spent several years with Chornomorets, becoming a fan favorite and playing at a high level. His playing career culminated at the age of 30 when he transitioned to coaching.
Coaching Career
Chornomorets Odessa (1982-1988)Altman's coaching career began in 1976 when he was appointed as a youth coach at Chornomorets' academy. In 1982, he became the club's assistant coach, and in 1986, following the resignation of head coach Viktor Prokopenko, he took over the reins as interim manager.
Under Altman's guidance, Chornomorets emphasized the development of local talent, particularly through their reserve team. Several promising players emerged from this system, including Serhiy Simonenko, Ihor Kosyrin, and Ruslan Balabanov.
Moscow Dynamo (1989-1991)
In 1989, Altman joined FC Dynamo Moscow as an assistant coach to Anatoly Byshovets. During his two years with the club, he worked with a talented squad that included Igor Dobrovolskiy, Igor Kolyvanov, Andrei Kanchelskis, and Aleksandr Borodyuk.
In 1990, Altman was promoted to head coach, becoming the first Ukrainian to hold that position. However, his tenure at Dynamo was short-lived, and he returned to Chornomorets in 1991.
Chornomorets Odessa (1991-1994)
Altman's second stint at Chornomorets was marked by a focus on youth development and the promotion of local players. He played a crucial role in the emergence of several talented footballers, including Andriy Gusin, Serhiy Kornilov, and Vadym Plotnikov.
In 1994, Altman left Chornomorets to join the coaching staff of the South Korean Olympic team under Byshovets.
FC Zimbru Chișinău (1996-1999)
After his time in South Korea, Altman returned to club management in 1996 when he was appointed head coach of FC Zimbru Chișinău in Moldova. Under his leadership, Zimbru won two Moldovan league titles (1998, 1999) and one Moldovan Cup (1997). He also guided the club to several successful European campaigns, including a run to the UEFA Champions League third qualifying round in 1998.
FC Metalurh Donetsk (1999-2002)
In 1999, Altman took over as head coach of FC Metalurh Donetsk. During his three seasons at the club, he led them to third place in the Ukrainian Premier League (2001-02) and the semi-finals of the Ukrainian Cup (2002). However, a humiliating 8-0 defeat to Werder Bremen in the UEFA Cup led to his dismissal in 2002.
Chornomorets Odessa (2003-Present)
Altman returned to Chornomorets Odessa in February 2003, with the club languishing at the bottom of the league table. Under his guidance, Chornomorets experienced a remarkable revival, and within a year, they were competing for European qualification.
In recent years, Altman has continued to lead Chornomorets to success, guiding them to several top-five finishes in the Ukrainian Premier League. He is widely regarded as one of the most respected and experienced coaches in Ukrainian football.
