Early Life and Education
Sergei Grigorievich Burovtsev was born on September 18, 1920, in the village of Pestovo (now part of the Tver Region). In 1923, he moved with his family to the town of Spirov. He completed seven grades of school and enrolled in a vocational school for factory workers. After graduating, Burovtsev became a mechanic at a textile factory.
Military Career
In 1937, Burovtsev joined the Vysshny Volochek Aero Club, where he later became a flight instructor. He was drafted into the Red Army in April 1938 and graduated from the Odessa Military Aviation School in 1939. Burovtsev served in the Far Eastern Military District of the Air Force and joined the Communist Party in 1943.
World War II and Test Pilot Career
During World War II, Burovtsev participated in the Soviet-Japanese War as commander of a squadron in the 534th Fighter Aviation Regiment. In 1946, he graduated from the Zhukovsky Air Force Academy.
In January 1947, Burovtsev joined the State Research Institute of the Air Force (GK NII VVS) as a test pilot. He participated in the testing of various aircraft, including the Yak-24, Yak-100, Yak-100U, Mi-6, Mi-1, and the Ka-15. He also conducted tests related to anti-stall rockets, canopy ejection systems, and deicing systems.
Hero of the Soviet Union
On June 25, 1958, Colonel Burovtsev was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union for his exceptional contributions to aviation.
World Record and Aviation Innovation
In 1959, Burovtsev set a world aviation record for altitude and payload capacity in the Mi-6 helicopter. He continued to innovate in the field of aviation, playing a vital role in the development of new aircraft and technologies.
Tragic Accident
On July 16, 1964, Burovtsev was killed in a tragic accident during a test flight of the Ka-22 helicopter. He and his crew were attempting to evaluate the stability and handling characteristics of the aircraft. During the flight, the helicopter experienced a sudden and uncontrolled right turn, followed by a steep dive. Despite their efforts, the crew was unable to recover the aircraft. Burovtsev and one other crew member perished in the crash.
Legacy and Honors
Colonel Sergei Grigorievich Burovtsev was a pioneering aviator and a true hero of the Soviet Union. He was awarded several prestigious honors, including the Order of Lenin, the Order of the Red Banner, and four Orders of the Red Star. Burovtsev's legacy continues to inspire young aviators and engineers alike.
