Biography of Sergey Gaponenko
Early Life and EducationSergey Gaponenko is a Belarusian physicist and academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus. He was born in Minsk and completed his education at the Belarusian State University in 1980.
Career
After graduating, Gaponenko began his career at the Institute of Physics of the National Academy of Sciences of the Belarusian SSR. He later joined the Institute of Molecular and Atomic Physics of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, where he held various positions including Deputy Director for Scientific Work (1997-1999), Acting Director (1999-2000), and Director (2000-2007). Since 2001, he has also been the head of the Nano-Optics Laboratory, which is part of the Institute of Physics of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus.
Scientific Contributions
Gaponenko's scientific research is focused on condensed matter physics and nanostructure optics. He has conducted studies on the nonlinear optical properties of impurity semiconductor crystals, the spectral properties of nanocrystals embedded in a dielectric matrix, and the changes in their characteristics during the transition to bulk materials. He has also proposed the use of colloidal nanostructures as photonic crystals and investigated the changes in quantum processes in such systems, leading to alterations in the probabilities of quantum transitions in molecules, enhancement of nonlinear optical effects, and increased sensitivity of spectroscopic methods. Additionally, he has studied the patterns of light propagation in complex structures, including fractal ones.
Awards and Recognition
Gaponenko has received several accolades for his contributions to the field of physics. He was awarded the Prize of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus in 2010 and has been a corresponding member of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus since 2004. He also holds the title of Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences (1996) and Professor (2008).

In addition to his research, Gaponenko is the author of over 150 scientific papers. He has also written a textbook titled "Introduction to Nanophotonics," which has been recommended by the University of Cambridge as a teaching resource for senior students and graduate students.
