Early Life and Education

Sergey Vartanovich Grigoryan was born on April 14, 1923, in Ordzhonikidze (now Vladikavkaz), the capital of North Ossetia. Shortly after his birth, his family moved to the village of Tetri-Tskaro in the Georgian SSR (now Republic of Georgia). In 1940, Grigoryan completed high school in Tetri-Tskaro and enrolled at Pushkin Tbilisi Pedagogical Institute.

Military Career

On June 22, 1941, the first day of the Great Patriotic War, Grigoryan was drafted into the Red Army by the Ordzhonikidze District Military Commissariat in Tbilisi. He was sent to the Kharkov Military Medical School, where he completed a year-long course training as a military paramedic. In late 1942, Grigoryan graduated with the rank of junior lieutenant and was deployed to the active front.

Service as a Medical Officer

Grigoryan served as the commander of the medical platoon of the 19th Guards Airborne Regiment (10th Guards Airborne Division, 37th Army, Steppe Front). He was a skilled organizer and leader, ensuring the safe evacuation of wounded soldiers from the battlefield. Grigoryan's courage and heroism were evident in his actions, as he personally carried out 40 wounded soldiers to safety during battles on the Dnieper River right bank in October 1943.

Awards and Recognition

Grigoryan's bravery and dedication earned him numerous awards, including the Medal "For Courage" and the Order of the Red Star. His superiors recognized his exceptional qualities, commending him for his "heroic" and "talented" service.

Final Sacrifice and Legacy

On October 4, 1943, Grigoryan was severely wounded while fighting in the village of Annovka, Dnepropetrovsk Oblast. During a desperate attempt to break through an encirclement, he sacrificed his own life to shield his battalion commander from enemy fire. Grigoryan was posthumously awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union on December 20, 1943. His remains were buried on the high bank of the Dnieper River in the village of Dneprovokamenka.

Honors and Remembrance

Sergey Grigoryan's heroic legacy continues to inspire generations of his countrymen. A memorial in the village of Tetri-Tskaro pays tribute to his sacrifice, and his name is inscribed on the Wall of Memory in Vladikavkaz. His unwavering determination and courage remain a testament to the indomitable spirit of those who fought for the freedom of their country during the Great Patriotic War.
