Early Life and Education
Sergei Ivanovich Kalinin was born on August 16, 1896, in Kostroma, Russia, into a humble family. His elder brother was a revolutionary worker. Kalinin's education reached only the third grade, and he worked from a young age, including in a tobacco factory and at a clothing store. He also sang in a church choir.
Military Service and Revolutionary Involvement
In 1915, Kalinin joined the military commissariat and served until 1917. In 1919, he volunteered to fight in the frontline during the Russian Civil War.
Theatrical Career
After returning to Kostroma in 1920, Kalinin began his acting career at the Theater Studio Productions. In 1927, he moved to Moscow and found work at the Maly Theater and, from 1928, at the Moscow Art Theater. He held administrative roles, such as Secretary of the Party Organization, and oversaw the MHAT's relocation during World War II.

In addition to acting, Kalinin taught extensively. He was a pedagogue-director at TYUZ and GITIS, and from 1935 to 1950, he taught at the Moscow Theater School (now the M.S. Shchepkin Higher Theatre School). From 1952 to 1954, he was the chief director of the First Dramatic Theater of the Group of Soviet Forces in Germany.
Retirement and Return to the Stage and Screen
In 1959, Kalinin was forced into retirement but continued to teach at the Institute of Culture and direct at amateur theaters. His film debut came in 1926, but he gained prominence as a comedic actor later in life. Notable roles include Kornei Nefedovich in "The Tale of Siberian Land," Uhovertov in "The Inspector General," and Ded in "Zhuravushka."
