Early Life and Education

Sergei Ivanovich Kalyakin was born on June 16, 1952, in Minsk, the capital of Belarus. His maternal uncle, Nikolai Dementey, was the Chairman of the Supreme Soviet of the Byelorussian SSR. Kalyakin graduated from the Minsk Radio Engineering Institute in 1977, earning a qualification as a radio engineer. Later, in 1992, he obtained a diploma in political science from the Belarusian State University.

Communist Party Involvement

Kalyakin became a member of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (CPSU) in 1977. After graduating from the institute, he held various positions in the party and government, including instructor of organizational departments in the Partizansky district committee and Minsk city committee of the CPB. He also served as secretary of the party committee of the Beltelecom Construction Trust.

Political Career

In 1991, Kalyakin joined the Communist Party of Belarus (CPB), which was established after the dissolution of the CPSU. He quickly rose through the ranks, becoming the party's Secretary in 1991 and First Secretary in 1994. In May 2007, he became Co-Chairman of the Political Council of the United Democratic Forces. When the CPB was renamed the Belarusian Party of the Left "Fair World" in 2009, Kalyakin maintained his leadership.

Presidential Ambitions

Kalyakin was elected as a deputy to the Supreme Council of the Republic of Belarus in 1996, where he led the communist faction. He was a candidate for President of Belarus in 2001 and was considered a potential candidate in 2006. However, he lost in the primaries and became the head of Aleksandr Milinkevich's electoral headquarters.

Post-Communism

In 2015, an initiative group was formed to support Kalyakin's candidacy in the Belarusian presidential election. However, the group failed to collect the required 100,000 signatures to register Kalyakin as a candidate. He has since remained active in Belarusian politics as the leader of the Belarusian Party of the Left "Fair World."

Personal Life

Kalyakin is married and has two children.
