Sergei Ivanovich Lebedev

Early Life and Education

Sergei Ivanovich Lebedev was born on April 9, 1948, in Djizak, Uzbek SSR (now Uzbekistan). He graduated from the Chernihiv branch of the Kyiv Polytechnic Institute in 1970. In 1978, he graduated with honors from the Diplomatic Academy of the USSR Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Military and Intelligence Career

From 1971 to 1972, Lebedev served in the Soviet Army. In 1973, he joined the state security organs. From 1975 to 1978, he worked in the First Chief Directorate of the KGB, the Soviet foreign intelligence agency.

Counterintelligence and Reconnaissance Training

Lebedev received counterintelligence training at the Kiev KGB School and reconnaissance training at the Red Banner Institute of the KGB.

Official Representative in the US

From 1998 to 2000, Lebedev served as the official representative of the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) in the United States.

Director of the SVR

On May 20, 2000, Lebedev was appointed Director of the SVR by presidential decree. He held this position until 2004.

Military Rank and Decorations

Lebedev holds the rank of General-Lieutenant and has received various awards for his service.
