Career as a Player
Early Career and Club SuccessSergei Shishchenko began his playing career at FC Yunist Kharkiv, before signing his first professional contract with FC Metalist Kharkiv in 1993. In 1994, he moved to FC Shakhtar Donetsk, where he won two Ukrainian Cups and a league silver medal.
Record-Breaking Striker
In 1999, Shishchenko joined FC Metalurh Donetsk, where he spent the majority of his career. He became the league's top scorer in the 2001/02 season and is the only player to score hat-tricks in two consecutive matches in the Ukrainian top division.
Clubs and Honors
Throughout his playing career, Shishchenko represented several other clubs, including Kryvbas Kryvyi Rih, FC Baltika Kaliningrad, and FC Metalurh Zaporizhya. He also had loan spells at FC Nyva Ternopil and FC Illichivets Mariupol.
International Career
Shishchenko earned 14 caps for the Ukrainian national team, scoring one goal. He was part of the team that reached the play-offs for the 2002 FIFA World Cup.
Career as a Coach
Youth DevelopmentAfter retiring as a player, Shishchenko began his coaching career in 2010 as manager of the FC Metalurh Donetsk reserve team. He later held similar positions at FC Stal Dniprodzerzhynsk and FC Bukovyna Chernivtsi.
FC Shakhtar Donetsk
In 2017, Shishchenko became coach of the FC Shakhtar Donetsk youth team. Under his guidance, the team won bronze medals in the youth championship and participated in the UEFA Youth League.
Further Managerial Roles
He subsequently managed MFC Mykolaiv, FC Polissya Zhytomyr, and most recently, FC Veres Rivne.
