Birth and Early Life
Sergei Aleksandrovich Zhigalko was born on March 1, 1989, in Minsk, Belarus. He is the younger brother of fellow chess grandmaster Andrei Zhigalko.
Chess Career
Early AchievementsZhigalko emerged as a promising chess prodigy at a young age. In 2003, he won the World Youth Chess Championship in the under-14 category. The following year, he triumphed at the European Youth Chess Championship in the under-14 section, ahead of a rising star named Magnus Carlsen.
Grandmaster Title and Belarus Championships
Zhigalko achieved the coveted title of grandmaster in 2007, at the age of 18. He has since won the Belarusian Chess Championship on multiple occasions, with victories in 2009, 2012, and 2013.
International Success
Zhigalko's international achievements include a silver medal at the World Junior Chess Championship in 2009. In 2006, he won the European Junior Chess Championship in the under-18 category. Additionally, he has won several prestigious open tournaments, such as the Baku Open (2011 and 2012) and the Nakhchivan Open (2012).
